85-36MR01 36" Rear Discharge Spindle Repair Question

Recommended Posts

Seems this question has been asked quite a bit, but I'm pretty green when it comes to mechanical repair and want to confirm my thinking. I had the outside blade spindle fail on my 85-36MR01 mowing deck (running on a C-121 if that matters). I've reviewed several parts lists - if I purchase a replacement spindle (pt #103119) is it just a matter of inserting the new spindle into my existing mounting bracket and then reassembling and attaching?

Thanks for any guidance.

Yes, the 103119 spindle shaft assembly should get you back up and running. However, it looks like the remains of your old 103119 are still inside the housing and will need to be removed first. They are pressed in to the housing.

I agree.... you must remove the remains of the old bearing 103119 from the cast iron housing.  Using a press of some sort, or even a large vise, press out the old one.  CAUTION...press it out from the SMALL end of the housing.  Put the new one in from the LARGE end...using a press, NOT a hammer.

Excellent advise - bearings do NOT tolerate impact......

@Sbaughman  glairing lubrication failure ! thats the commonality of noisy / whyining  decks , they are literally  telling you what's going on !  all 3 of my R/D  decks have been converted over to  the correct grease , that includes every related , belt driven PTO part . no noise screaming clutch , pto lever smooth , solid  , easy . initial idea is good , its the lubrication building detail that makes the difference .that lucas XTRA HD  chassis grease , has a 550 degree flash point , that gouged spindle , would not have happened . make a change to what failed , regularly clean out and re grease , new bearings , thats the lubrication fail point . just a suggestion , pete

Good advice for all members.... but the bearing assembly 103119 is a sealed bearing for the older 36" decks with 'Double-D' configuration ...impossible to apply the Red Grease ' cuz it can't be opened up from either end.
