1971 Raider 12 Restoration

Slowly moving along. Got my frame in primer. Hopefully will get color on it and a few other parts during the warm temps over this weekend. Fingers crossed !!

 

man is it a lot of effort to get these parts ground down and cleaned up. Credit to all of you who have done this multiple times.

Special thanks to @ebinmaine for transmission help dealing with the hubs, giving it an initial inspection and supplying me with the necessary parts. I replaced the bearings and seals and it’s ready to bolt back together and get some paint. Then this thing will be looking like some form of tractor again!! 
 

still lots of grinding and paint to do, but it feels like I have advanced the ball way down the field here. Very very motivated to keep this thing going!

^^ the IH red looks nice! I like how it looks a bit darker. I ended up going with the ol regal red on mine (clear coated) and it’s brighter than I wanted but I think I’m pretty happy with it in the end. I noticed that the original color seems to have a little hint of pinkish tone to it, but the IH and regal seem to be pretty pure red.

I believe that pinkish tone is the result of age and fading.

Red was international and the white was gloss Dover white

You gotta stop putting pics of that tractor up. You're just killing any progress I make on my 701 because I wanna swap my "Raider-ish" tractor back onto the lift!

Wow, time really flies! Still been working on my Raider although not a ton of pics. Progress is slow with a 1 1/2 year old and 200+ year old house, but we are moving along. Really racing the clock to be able to plow with the tractor this winter. 
 

with the transmission back in I decided to throw it on a spare set of wheels. This simple act completely ignited a fire under me to pick up the pace. I’ve been grinding away at loads of parts in an attempt to paint them before these fall temps really set in. I’m hoping within the next week to be down to the only the hood, engine and wheels remaining. Wish me luck! 
 

any guesses what the HECK some previous owner did to these attach a matic brackets? I see that they were an OE wheel horse item sold as a bolt on setup, but something is telling me these are not wheel horse factory welds 🤣 either way, I’m glad to have them and I’ll probably clean up the expert welds with a grinder so they look a liiiittle better.

Yes those could be factory welds. You have to remember WH was building consumer garden tractors, not structural steel or process piping.

That’s true. Maybe it’s just me but I would never in a million years send something I worked on out the door looking like that.  They looked better caked in oil and dirt haha. But they do work!

Consider, as well, that these might have been assigned to one of the lesser-skilled welders on the line. For parts like this, the likely alternative to “ship” is “scrap” -- $$.  😁

Just a side note. Even though you are using rattle can paint, I'm glad to see you are protecting your lungs with a good mask.

Thanks! Yea, I am pretty good about it MOST of the time. Especially since I had my daughter I’m trying to take better care of myself so I can be around as long as possible.
