312-8 engine

I picked up a 312-8 to restore and curious why the engine is offset on frame. Appears the upper bolts on offset side go through the frame but has short bolts that align on opposite side. Is this correct?

The bolt on the right side of the picture,  that has the ground wire on it,  goes through the frame and has a nut on it.

There will be a pair of bolts going up through the frame into the block on the offset side.

Yes, that's correct

The engine is offset on the frame to keep the belt in tighter to the frame. If that engine were slid over, none of the holes would work and the belt and belt guard would be another 2 inches out into your right leg if it was designed to work like that.

8 hp kohlers mount with the regular bolt holes.

It does appear like that but no, those are the oil pan bolts & they're both the same length.

Like @ebinmaine said, there're two bolts under the frame that bolt up into the bottom of the oil pan on the offset side. (pretty sneaky). :handgestures-thumbupright:
