Can the brake shaft seal on a 1991 312-8 be replaced without splitting the transmission?

Yep just pick the old one out. Tape the keyway to avoid nicks. Grease & carefully tap the new one in with a piece of pvc 1 1/4 I think?

I also use a very big washer up against the oil seal as you pop the PVC pipe piece with a rubber mallet!

I often file the keyway groove so that's not the tough part for me.

The lock ring groove on the outside can be really tough to get a seal past.

I think the last time I used HD packing tape to cover the groove.

Grease the seal well.

Jim - not totally necessary, but it helps to remove the tire on that side (duh) and raise that side higher than the other so as not to loose fluid.....

Definitely be removing the wheel and that side will be raised up. It’s low on gear oil now so hope not to lose any. Thanks for the reminder though.
