Round Hood Rescue

Recommended Posts

WHX??

I gotta tell ya Mike I made a pact with the devil. Any model round hood I come across for fair coin I bring it home. Regardless of shape.

Rough yes but all there in the way of guards and such. Only real sore spot I see might be the bottom front of the hood.

Any plans for it yet? I have a square pan seat that needs repair you can have.

Not a half bad start! Even the 2 spoke OE steering wheel looks good - most don't The parking brake looks to be  - elseware.

If the K181 runs  - great score....

I think this one is gonna get a restoration. It would look good next to my patina 753. Looks like I'm gonna need some more stuff from you :D

That tractor ain't rough. You should see the "swamp fresh" junk I've had to work with. I think it looks great!

I don't see the key switch or the hood knurled knobs either.

No they're gone. Both easily replaceable. I have a correct key switch on the shelf for this anyway.

How are the mounting spots for those knobs?  The ones on my 854 were let's say not in the best shape.

the front will need chased with a tap, but will be ok. The mounting spots on the tank I'm going to have to fill with metal epoxy, drill and tap.

Look in the shifter tunnel Randy.  Probably shot anyway but not a deal breaker.

The more I look the more I think you got a benny harrow Mike and a 854 for free!

You may well be correct! The more I look the more I find I need!

The entire electrical system needs built as it's all gone. Coil was missing the ignition wire so water got down in it and ruined it. Looks like we had a frame/transmission swap with a newer tractor. I think in looking at my 753 I can just cut that welded rod off and drill a hole for the thumb screw? Looks like the 2 piece tank was leaking g as well and the globs of goop were put on to try and stop it. I've never tried to take a 2 piece tank apart, but I've head it's miserable. I may just try to seal the inside with redkote and call it done. Thoughts on that?

The missing emergency brake. Is a square hood bracket the same as a round hood? I have a square hood bracket.

Yep that's a '65 hood hinge. I would think cutting would work tho.

On the parking brake lever I don’t think it will work. Look at the one on your 753 ...should be the same.

On the tank I had the same problem on a 502. I sealed it. Worked great.

Did a little work to it today, got the switch wired up. And the carb & fuel pump rebuilt. New exhaust, new plug wire, coil, points, condenser. Gotta get a battery yet and wire up the ammeter and then we should see what this engine is gonna sound like.

More work this evening. Took the voltage regulator off took the cover off, cleaned the contacts inside and out. Got the steering wheel off to work on the gas tank. What a good feeling when that comes off!!

Anyone know what's going on here? Looks like we have a suburban toolbox with the 854 fenders. Is that what everyone else is seeing?

Also it looks like someone has been in the engine. New piston and the valve seats look new.

I think you're fine on the fenders. My 854 has the same extra holes.

RedKote is a great sealer to use. I've done several 2 piece tanks with 100% success. Cleanliness is the key.

Are any of these levers right?

Coated the inside of the tank this evening, now wait for it to dry and then probably do another coat.

Took the brake cover off the side. This thing is just a cobbled mess of parts. That's a square hood parking brake. I might as well look for a round hood carcass for parts!
