Wayne0 1,174 #1 Posted November 17, 2023 Not sure where to put this, so I'm starting here. I have to replace the lining on the PTO clutch. Before I tear into it, is there anything special I should know? Tips or tricks? Thanks, guys.
Wayne0 1,174 #3 Posted November 18, 2023 Thanks for the info, but I've ordered the lining material and want to know if there is any tricks or tips on getting it apart. The nuts on the brake look fun to get at! This will be done over the winter. I've done my last mowing.(leaves!)
wallfish 18,072 #4 Posted November 18, 2023 What tractor is this you're working on? Is it slipping? Can you tell the lining is worn by looking at the edge of it? Most of the time resurfacing the flat on the bell, resurface the lining along with proper adjustments can fix the slipping if there's enough lining. You'll need to remove the bell and there will be 4 bolts holding the clutch plate on. The lining will attach to that clutch plate. Some older were riveted but sounds like yours is newer so it's glued on the plate. Heat will help to get the old stuff off. Roughen up the clutch plate surface with a grinder, I did the back of the lining to in order to help the epoxy hold. I used JB Weld to attach mine
Wayne0 1,174 #5 Posted November 18, 2023 The machine is an old "Work Horse" GT 1800 1984 with a Briggs twin. The lining is gone. Can't see an edge.

The lining is on the plate side, not the bell side. I relined mine after it exploded on me, I used a liner off Amazon for a large deere tractor...ill see if i can find it https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/97432-i-relined-a-blown-clutch-disc/#comment-1044448 Edited November 19, 2023 by RED-Z06
peter lena 9,242 #7 Posted November 19, 2023 @Wayne0 while you are at that replacement stage , how do any related belt driven attachments rotate ? can you move an attachment , BY HAND from the PTO POINT ? regularly hear neighbors , screaming clutch engagements , what could that possibly mean ? probably a good time to check out related , movement ease on units . just a suggestion , Pete

I do all the bearings in your style. This is the first time I've had this off, so I'll do the same! Everything rotates easy from the PTO on.
peter lena 9,242 #9 Posted November 19, 2023 @Wayne0 that entire set up / and related areas was a gold mine for improvement . also note the battery tender plug in point , added battery to engine grounding , for related electrical charging issues , Pete
