Wheel Horse 953 hydraulic lift

Recommended Posts

There is a spring inside the hydraulic pump/reservoir that holds the control lever in a neutral position. The one on my unit is broken. Does anyone have information on a replacement or have an idea about making one?

Try Norms toys I don't have the link right now but he came to the MI WH show and had just had a bunch made, both styles I think, If I remember right they were $25 each but not sure on that.

This is the same spring used in the HY-2 pump (part #4837). I twisted out a copy of my broken original from music wire, baked it for an hour at 500 degrees to release the work stresses and installed it in my pump. It works just fine. Cost me less than a buck and took about 15 minutes to shape. If you go this route be very careful when you remove the reservoir from the pump body. The gasket (part #4842) may disintegrate on you and it's NLA from WH. You can however get a new gasket from an IH dealer for around $20 (IH part #IH-386368-R1). IH also has the newer coil type springs used in the 1054/1054A pumps.

I have the same problem on my 702...norm was at the show and did want $25.00, but I wasn't sure if I had the type 2.

Is there a manual available to rebuild the pump or just to replace the gasket, and spring? Linen Beige just scared me with the gasket thingy. :thumbs2:

Just wanted to say thanks for the spring info. That's a much better way than paying 25 dollars!!!

Don't be afraid Steve. My gasket survived without a scratch. It's really only a simple ring made from fibre gasket material anyway. If yours gets torn you can probably cut out a new one in a few minutes.

You really don't need a manual to rebuild one of these things. They are bare bones simple gear pumps with a couple of standard O rings in them. Toro and Parts Tree each have the parts drawings and those are good enough to work from. The seal for the drive shaft (part number 1447/superceeded to 5959) is still available from Parts Tree for $13.73, or Toro for $15.62. It's actually the only part still available.

The biggest thing to look out for is worn faces on the pump gears. I didn't think to check while I had mine open, but it may be possible to swap the gears from one side to the other so you have new faces working. That would depend on whether the forward gear can be pressed off the drive shaft.

I needed the hydraulic lever return spring for my 1054WH. This morning I went to my local WH Dealer in Wheeling,WV who has been a CUB CADET and IH Tractor Dealer forever. I went armed with WH Parts book, Pictures of pump components, broken spring, Cub Cadet model numbers using Hein Werner pump, and IH Gasket Part # for pump canister. Along with high hopes of getting a parts person who would be willing to do a little searching through older Cub Cadet Parts listings for the possible correct spring!!!! The first parts person I saw, I knew was not a good candiate for my mission. Then a long time employee appeared at the counter, took one look at the pump canister and broken spring and smiled!!! He asked no questions and immediately started pecking away at the computer, The other parts guy asked if he might ask what the parts I had laying on the counter were for. I told him and he just stared at the parts. The guying looking up my part said that he had seen the spring used on Bolens tractors also. About that time his eyes got great big and a big smile appeared on his face. He said, you are not going to believe this, but the part is no longer available through IH/Cub Cadet. I said, that did not surprise me. He said, however, his inventory showed he just might have the spring on his shelf. He went to the parts been and pulled out the spring that I needed!!!! IH PART # CCIH 386371 R1. Of course he only had one. I would have purchased more if he had them!!! The price was $7.95 plus $.48 for the governor of WV. Total price of $8.43. He said the spring had been on his shelf since 2001. What a wonderful day in the neighborhood!!! The spring has been installed and 1054 is ready for the next snow!!! I will be checking with every CUB CADET/IH Tractor dealer I pass by to see if they happen to have this part!!!!

I thought maybe the IH part # would be of benefit to fellow WH collectors!!! Enjoy!!!

Jay: I enjoyed reading your report on getting an IH/Cub Cadet spring for your Wheel Horse Hein-Werner hydraulic pump!

I was looking around the web today and found this site that reports it can make and seal, o ring and or special washer and thought this might be a source for wheel horse parts that are no longer avaialbe through other sources.
