Looking great!!! Those tires are definitely the right ones. Going to be a beautiful tractor when you are done.

There was one more thing I had hoped to save. It was badly bent and had to be straightened and a new nipple welded on. Took up the rest of my afternoon.

It isn't perfect, but it looks good enough.

Yes they look nice. Might be a bit harsh on my backside. They are heavy duty!

Just to say I did something today, I tried a new wheel color.

This would be be the correct muffler but they are getting hard to find in 1 inch and when you do they don't exactly give them away.

I know but the one I have is what was on it, and I really like that pepper shaker style. Years ago when I bought it I remember it stood out to me that it was different.

I straightened it up the best I could and added another baffle in the neck when I replaced it. I hope it works well.

Well I got the engine ready to go to the machine shop. Took it all apart, cleaned the block. Also took the donor K181 apart for the piston. The piston looks brand new with the only scratches being what I put on it removing the old rings.

Also- the donor engine had an aluminum pan. Full size just like the cast version. I've never seen that before.

That's bizarre... crank is on the way.

Thank you!

I have found a NOS 2.885 (.010 over) piston and ring set. Probably won't be installed for a while until I get the crank ground so I know which rod to get. That matches what my block was bored for, and keeps the "smaller" original bore as well.

Correct piston came today. Needed to be cleaned up a little (light oxidation because it had been out of the plastic), and it looks great. Matches the bore perfectly. Little by little!

Still haven't taken the crank to be ground so I fixed another issue: the left front spindle was wallowed out enough to let the wheel wobble a bit, so I welded the hole for the roll pin up and re-drilled it. Surprisingly it all worked out and fit perfectly.

Since my front axle was one of my clear coat guinea pigs, I had to strip it back to bare metal and repaint it. The 2 part clear coat is good stuff, but it shrinks more than a weenie in winter. The base coat needs to be properly cured before applying it. Anyway, I used the rustoleum clear over the base and it looks good enough. The spacers on the spindles are just temporary. My original wheels are gonna take a great deal of work before I can use them.

Not much, but it's on all fours. Still gotta finish the rear wheels. The fronts are likely temporary, but the originals are nasty and will take a while. I got tired of it being on the stand and at least it looks like a tractor a little more now.

Haven't even started the sheet metal but I set the hood on for grins...

Mine was the same ... it was a poke & hope :handgestures-fingerscrossed: with an over size pin for me. Spindle repairs like that are a son of a gun... nice job. :tools-wrench: :thumbs2:

Luckily 701 spindle shafts are drilled dead on at 90 degrees. At least I could clamp it on the drill press and make it work.

The steering shaft is bugging me. Where it comes through the tank at an angle makes it a puzzle on how to keep it from scraping and making a mess. To be such a simple machine compared to a classic tractor, it has plenty of fickle little issues to get around.

Took a while, but I now have two K160/161 cranks ground and polished.

The original crank from the 701 was .013 below minimum when pulled from the engine. It looked very nice but probably would have had some slap if used as it was.  Talk about well worn! It was ground to .020 undersized.

The second crank came from @WHX?? and it was ground to .010 undersized.

Now I just need to find a good connecting rod, and I'll finally be able to get back to the 701 build.

The shop sure knows how to make them pretty!  Cost me $85 for both since only one machine setup was needed.

Total for engine work is just under $200. That's an oversize cylinder bore, recut valve seats and valves ground, and grinding two cranks. Not too bad for today's prices.
