Hey guys, 

Been awhile, in between I bought a 1987 Chevrolet 3/4 project that I wanted to share with you. Here I have pictures from 5 mins ago.

Nice find!  Always liked this year gm truck, last of the square body and first with TBI.  And 3/4 ton is sweet.  Going to keep original engine or do a swap of some kind!

‘89 suburban grill. 
 

It is a V30, tbi 350, th400, np205, Dana 60 with power lok, 14 bolt with Detroit locker.

So update I guess, I got a free dash and it was rattle-canned pink and black. I got it a bit better but it’s still needs more work. This truck got new exhaust and soon a new/used 350

I worked for GM dealers and other Auto Parts Tech work back then. To say the least it was confusing to the public. C/K were NOT the same as R/V. 

 

 

C. K. R. V. 

As you know, the letters were General Motors' way of designation on the various body types available.

R/V  letters were in effect from 1987 to 1991. 

 

In 1987 the  "Classic/older" style Square body was changed from C/K to R/V in preparation for the upcoming body style changes. 

 

In 1988 GM released the new body style that would eventually be carried through the late 1990s, early 2000s (another multi year changeover)  

 

The above letters are: 

~ C. New for 1988 2 wheel drive pickup chassis ONLY. I believe these were available as ½ ton and ¾ ton for at least the first 2 model years, maybe more. I do know there was a "Light Duty" ¾ with 6 lugs. ALL of these had a bed but some dealers removed them. 

~ K. Same as above with 4wd. 

 

~ R. "Classic/older" style Square body Which were Suburbans, Full sized Blazers, Cab & chassis (no beds, various wheelbases),  "Heavy Duty" ¾ tons with 8 lugs and 1 ton. 

V. Same as above with 4wd. 

 

Once the 1992 model arrived ALL trucks went to C/K.

From 1992 to 1998 everything was still Letters. 

The 1999 Silverado is when the trucks (not counting Suburbans and Blazers)  started carrying MODEL names.  

They'd had many names before but most were  PACKAGES.

My insurance company even has it listed as such, and the K designation was not an option.

That's correct. Thanks for the reminder.  

 

GM started a year ahead of the (then new) body styles.

I have a v10 according to the insurance company and in the 80s Silverado was a trim package then in the 90s all trucks were Silverado but I could be wrong

Scottsdale, Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne and Silverado were all trim packages right?
