Headless Wheel Horse 252-H

I picked up a DOA 1988 252-H 22-13KE01 today for $50 that was missing the head on the Kawasaki 12.5HP. Aside from the obvious engine issues to looks in decent shape. The rear tires won't hold air from dry rot which made loading it on the trailer by myself pure pleasure but for the price I couldn't pass it up. (photos in link below) Any suggestions as to what to re-power it with? I've been looking for a vertical shaft diesel clone but haven't found one yet.
