AHS 1,546 #1 Posted June 27, 2023 My (new 3/23) C175 was steering hard, all the grease zerks hadnt been touched in a while! I discovered the steering gear had seen better days! The grease zerk is pointed right towards the fan gear. All i have to do is punch the roll pin out of the steering wheel, and then the gear and steering rod come out? Ive never done this before! Ive heard about cracks in the fan gear assembly?
ri702bill 9,498 #2 Posted June 27, 2023 (edited) Your upper steering gear is welded to the shaft as your picture shows. (Older versions were not - were held with a pin) The fan gear is pinned and MAY be a source of lost motion in the steering. Very common to have to line drill and ream one size up (say 1/4" to 5/16" to get a proper tight fit...) AND an extra shim may be needed behind the fan gear hub to get a better engagement of the teeth... The cracks you refer to may be the arms of the lower steering block - VERY prone to cracking.... Gear removal is Best done with a domed roll pin punch, NOT a flat faced drift. Edited June 27, 2023 by ri702bill
oliver2-44 10,739 #3 Posted June 27, 2023 I've learned from others on here and now just drill out the steering wheel roll pin with a carbide glass/tile bit. I do it in 2 passes stepping up in size. Take it slow and steady with a hand drill https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-SpeedLoad-Carbide-Hex-Shank-Glass-Tile-Bit-Set-4-Piece-AR1650G/205193138

squonk 43,894 #5 Posted June 27, 2023 The 2 bolts hold the block. The block holds the shaft the fan gear pivots on
AHS 1,546 #6 Posted June 29, 2023 Ok Im starting to wrap my head around this! Pretty simple! Im going to buy a whole (used) steering shaft to go into my C175. How many steering shafts did they make? The steering shaft was 21” +/-. 101476 should ring a bell, that was for the steering shaft.
AHS 1,546 #7 Posted June 29, 2023 Maybe im getting way to far into it….. but WH made 3 frames. The long C frames and the shaft Toro frames. How about the steering shafts? Were the steering shafts different? Im looking at one from a 86 308-8 for $10. (It wouldn’t be the worst $10 ive spent!!) my tractor is an 82 C175.
