6 speed 5060 LS transmission

Hello everyone... I'm new to the square and this would be my first post!!

I have two 1972 Raider 14's that have 6 speed 1 1/8 axle 10 pinion LS transmissions. One of them I purchased from the original owner and in pretty good shape for sitting a few years.

The second is in rough shape and need lots of TLC in the transmission department.

Looking for parts to rebuild and not seeing much out there for pinion replacements, gears, axles (new aftermarket).

The plan is to beef it up for serious plowing. Must be venders out there that the pullers are using?  

Thought I would take a short cut and pick everyone's brain for info.

6 speed, 10 pinion transmissions were used from 1967 to 72 or 73. 

Parts are available as good used but I haven't seen a new replacement for pinions or axles.  Hubs can be sourced from Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA. 

 

What's the exact issue with your own transmission?

 

To set up for plowing you'll obviously need great traction. 

Fluid filled tires, plenty of steel weight. You'll be fine.

  In my experience, the Wheel Horse transmission STOCK is pretty dang stout for pulling, working, etc as long as it’s tight and has oil in it.  After so many years of abuse, those two factors are the most important.  The only other thing that wears them out, is speed shifting and grinding gears.

A stock 5060 or later is great for plowing. I wouldn't worry about parts too much ... they are out there.

Really the only improvements are full length keyways on the axles with 2nd set screw.

A-Z has some self locking hubs that are choice.

Another upgrade might be to insure you have steel side plates on the diff. 

Pullers usually lock up the differential but you wouldn't want that for plowing or general use. 

Pull the transmission apart and see what it needs.

That would be correct on the speed shifting and the gears are well rounded on the edges. The shafts have the halfmoon keys all boogered up and not really repairable.

Even if I rotated the location. Unless they are welded up and turned back to size but that might raise heck with the hardness.

I could reverse engineer the splines and have new ones made. Does anyone think there would be a market for them? (I work at a machine shop).

I think there's definitely a market for them but it would be based on supply versus demand like any other thing. Given the fact that good used ones are available anywhere from $30 to $60 each I think I'd seriously consider a new one if it could be done for under $80.

I have doubts that you could even buy the material for that amount... it only gets cost effective if you are making oodles of them...

 

Had a chance to witness the spline roll forming process back in the mid '80's at Chrysler's Transmission plant in Kokomo.

Roll formed, no chip, similar to forging. The shaft area for the spline was turned to the mean diameter of the spline depth. The shaft is suspended on live centers as 2 opposing timed guided wedge shaped tools engage the shaft and roll the spline with about 100 tons of force - half the material goes up, the other half down. (Like rolling a pencil  between the palms of your hands with the hands wiping over each other.) One pass and it's done - takes about 8 seconds.... Impressive.

Splines are cut on these shafts and more than likely made out of 4140 which we use a lot of. Even 9310 if I wanted to get exotic.

Chrome Moly would be the ticket if you can find 1 1/8 ground to size.

Steel is the cheap part machine time is where the $$$ come in to play if you only do a few sets.

I could old school it with a Bridgeport and a index just to proof it out I suppose with some cold roll. (getting the spline correct)

Ouch boy's..... I know your just razzing me.... but

(a) I'm not a thief.

(b) home projects are after hours. Materials used.... you buy from the shop.

So, we will leave it at that.... 

 

I don't know about you guy's but I'm also "cheap" when it comes to buying parts, but I also would pay good money for new parts with quality.

Used shafts are ok provided you are not buying someone else's problems like egged out keyways or the shaft seal area wore out.

From my experience, A to Z Tractor sells ONLY very good usable parts.  

That's great for now but eventually the pool will dry up. 

 

If I had the availability to use a new shaft for decent price on a heavy worker I'd be pretty interested.
