My hopes would be that excess would work in my favor. When ordering an actuator for outside use, one also need to look at it's ability to survive in a wet environment. The more water tight, the better. I would want an IP rating of IP65 or higher. This rating would protect the unit from weather up to a moderate pressure washing. The push buttons are quite easy to gauge movement. I will probably add a spring per your great suggestion but it's working quite well as is...
