Engine 'dies' when cutters engaged

Recommended Posts

Surrey,UK based 244/5

Appreciate some help, please : I have a 30y+ old 244/5 which runs reasonably well until the cutters are engaged, then the power drops and the tractor struggles to cut, whilst revs drop and it sometimes just stalls.

Any ideas would be appreciated - thanks.

@Surrey,UK based 244/5  NEWBIE , first thought  is attachment , is in very poor  condition , mower deck build up , related bearings , need reservice , pto / clutch wear / condition . you might also have related  corrosion / shorting to related wiring  operation . recommend dropping , removing mower deck , remove mule drive , and inspect for heavy drag / resistance areas . you will probably find a collection of  drag / failure  areas . have you done anything at all on this for maintenance ?  is there help available  ?  a local shop , another W/ H OWNER ?  there are UK  MEMBERS ON THIS SITE , maybe some connection ? good luck , pete

@Ed Kennell  as you know  collective drag is a killer , often refer to , how easily does it move by hand ?  with engine off , key in pocket , can you move belt driven area to  unit , easily ? done / seen  many at this stage , hard to imagine  thinking that this is how it should be . UK , members will probably hop on , pete

Is the engine just slowing down with lack of power or is it loosing ignition and quits running?

Using the service manual shown above, check that the governor is fully opening the throttle when a load is suddenly put on the engine.

Thanks for the prompt reply. It has been serviced annually, lately by a mobile mechanic not the hugely expensive 'garden machinery experts' - so no serious work done  since new clutch 3y ago.

It does both, sometimes cuts out and wheezes to a halt, other times it just won't restart for a while. If I leave it a few minutes it reluctantly starts and drives slowly without the cutters

When this rains ceases that'll be done..
