RedPower47 111 #1 Posted November 29, 2022 Hey guys, How much am I (roughly) looking at to rebuild a tired K482? or have someone rebuild it? I dont mind doing it but time is an issue. Is there a good place to get the best parts? or is a re power worth it? or just have someone do it if its not to crazy. Just looking at all the possibilities, Its out of a D 180 Thanks
oliver2-44 10,698 #2 Posted November 29, 2022 This is a reputable business that remanufactures them. Not cheap at $1599, but parts are pricy and I believe this price includes the cost for you to ship your engine (core) and them to ship it back. http://shop.kustomlawnandgarden.com/CUB-CADET-KOHLER-M18-HP-ENGINE-LONGBLOCK-REMAN-CORE-CHARGE-CUB18.htm
pfrederi 18,643 #3 Posted November 29, 2022 The link above is for a Magnum 18 not a K482 Parts for the cast iron twins are very very hard to come by I doubt anyone is remanufacturing/overhauling them.
RedPower47 111 #4 Posted November 29, 2022 Thats what i was afraid of...... do you guys recommend just doing a re power?
pfrederi 18,643 #5 Posted November 29, 2022 Repower. I overhauled a M-18 last year. With Machine shop work (bore crank and valve seats) and parts (some kind of hard to find) I was just under $900.

RedPower47 111 #7 Posted November 29, 2022 do you guys know if an M18 would fit on a D series easy enough? obviously there would be some sort of small fab work im sure.
19richie66 17,630 #8 Posted November 30, 2022 (edited) As long as you can get the crank centerline to match up with the pump centerline, it should work fine. You may have to space the engine up. A Honda,Kohler or Briggs V-twin would be nice too. Edited November 30, 2022 by 19richie66

Given the engine orientation on the D series, it will be easier to repower than most. You'll just need to make sure you can source a flywheel stub adaptor for whatever engine you get.

I stopped rebuilding twins a few years back my NOS parts ran out and my long time supplier couldn’t get them anymore. At that time, parts and machine work was around 650-700 and my labor was 350. At the time, people complained about the price of 1000.00 for the complete rebuild.
pacer 3,177 #11 Posted December 10, 2022 As @kpinnc sez the D160's came with the 16hp K341 (I have one) and the K341's are still pretty plentiful with parts readily available. I would think that your trying for one of these would be dead simple, you would have to get the correct oil pan - there were 2-3 variations, but your coupler would swap over and with some minor wire/cable rerouting you would be set. Besides, that K341 is a bad a## engine, one of the best Koehler made.
