Well, I'll put it this way...

When I go in Walmart and buy 1 turkey... I come out with 3 turkeys over my shoulder... 1 for Thanksgiving, 1 for Christmas, and 1 for sometime in the new year.

This year, when I was coming out of Walmart... an elderly lady (God bless her heart) told me that I reminded her of Yancy Tucker with 3 turkeys over my shoulder...

TURKEY IS IN THE FRYER!!! A good hour and a half, and she'll be out, crispy golden brown...

The. Smell. Is. Amazing.

Gracie is waiting patiently... (this will be her first Thanksgiving that she actually remembers... last Thanksgiving she was still a crazy pup).

Put the turkey on rebar spit, use a bundt pan under for drippings, put foil under, place can over, charcoal on top and around edge, keep adding charcoal as needed, about 2 hours and she's ready. It's hot here today though about 82. sweating a little setting this up!

The kid called yesterday and said they are eating chicken, turkey was not in the budget!

Sounds like a chicken in her smoker.

That's interesting. Around here whole turkey is $1.19/lb whereas whole chicken is $1.22/lb.

I will reflect on what it means to be blessed enough to even be able to celebrate the day, and give thanks to a loving God for what he provides.

What a most valuable blessing we were bestowed when God placed us on this land, in this country, and I hope that all who reads this agrees…

I just had to say, as I sit and reflect on this day, @Horse Newbie... you nailed it.

Thanks for writing that. Very good. :greetings-waveyellow:

$2 something here for turkey, chicken  $1.15 a lb. might just be the net. 6 pound chicken or 15 pound turkey. She is a single mom with her own place and doesn't ask for help. Figure it is getting really tight.

Seen a neighbor off and on pouring 5 gallon of fuel in his oil tank. Might be waiting to for price to drop but think he is struggling.

Happy Thanksgiving from our woods in Kentucky.  Charcoal column turkey.  Overall picture:

Looking down into the guts of the setup:

20221124_114908.jpg.8b252dd0deb86cec36fa1d3b617ed41a.jpg

#10 tins with chicken wire tubes.  Heavy duty foil reflectors wrapped around your choice of stakes - I used fence posts this year.  Light the charcoal off, season the bird (I used salt, pepper, sage, thyme, savory, and butter, stuffed cavity with onion & lemon), double bag in oven bags and hang in the center.  Use extra space for sides.  The Dutch oven in the picture has the stuffing, we added another Dutch oven with a stuffed squash a little later, then later yet a pan of beets, and a pan of mashed potatoes.

On the propane camp stove, my son made some cranberry jelly (fresh cranberries, sugar, and water cooked until proper consistency), gravy, and green beans.  Homemade biscuits. Pies for dessert.

Picture of my plate:

I have nothing to add to the thread. Wife did the cooking.

...and it was great.

@8ntruck it’s surprising there is enough heat to cook the bird?  No wind must be?

We've cooked lots of turkeys in setups like this.  I learned about it at some Boy Scout leadership training I took a long time ago.

There is plenty of heat.  In fact, I had to lift the bird up out of the sweet spot to slow it down.  That set up is a reflector oven.  It works on radiant heat instead of heated air.  The foil walls act as a wind break, so wind does not really bother things.  One time, it was windier than usual, so I ended up adding a foil cover to 'keep the heat in'.

I'm thinking about building a studier version of this.  Make the sides out of sheet steel so it will be self supporting and build baskets on the ends made out of expanded metal to hold the coals.

We even found a use for Wheel Horse bourbon!  Smoked a pecan pie for about 90 minutes at 250 degrees.  It rocked!
