Me as well.

I have often contemplated going to better style tie rods with grease fittings. I keep hoping that my stock tie rods will break so I can change over... but they never seem to wear out... :P

I've made 2 sets, but used the internal threaded rod ends with the plastic bushing. No issues,

Used 5/8 zinc plated round stock for the C81, turned the 7/16 - 20 threads on the ends in the lathe.

Used 5/8 cold rolled hex stock for the 854 8 speed, reduced the middle to 9/16" diameter, left a short hex and turned the threads as above.  Three years on them both  - no issues.. And allows a fine tuning to get a tad of toe-in.....

Just got in from mowing, this thing steers like it's on ball bearings, the old tierods were all rusted stiff. Now I'll have to fix the rest of the steering assembly.

Crap, why do ya gotta go and make comments like that......LOL.  I've been "getting by" with the old original sloppy rods on my tractor.  Add another project to the list

Amazing how much difference what a small thing can make. Very nice job on those links!

I used tri ribs with similar heim joints, and even with 110lbs of suitcase weights, I can steer my Bronco "Cadillac style" with one hand!

Excellent. I would'nt have thought replacing just the tierods would make that big a difference.

What are your next points of attention regarding the steering assembly?

I bought a set of new replacement stock type a few years ago.  They lasted about 2 seasons on our rough terrain and started to loosen up.

Now when we replace tie rods they all get heim joints.

Next will be front bearing, assembly block bushings, axle pivot, shims or bushings. That's a winter project. Thanks for all feedback.

I went with heims joints in 1989 when I got tired of hammering them back together. I used heims joints that are brass lined, they are still tight.

I have bushed the clutch rod, Pto rod and rebuilt the axle povit on mt C-120. I drilled out the clutch, and PTo to 5/8" and added bushings. the axle povit I made an over size pin and added more metal to the front hitch.

It's a 3500  lbs from northern Tool. They were a lot cheaper back in 1989 when we did all that work to the front axle.

I used 2000 lb stubs and 5 x 4.5 hubs so a Wheelhorse wheel would fit.

Parts can be bought off the fleeeBay or many other sources.

In my particular case I cut the stub to length needed...

Then had another member drill the stub to accept the Wheelhorse spindles. I put a light coating of J. B. Weld on the spindle and popped the stub onto it.
