Seeing flame

My 1984 B Series has been underpowered lately and I just noticed this when I ran it with the engine exposed.

Any suggestion as to what I can do about it?

You need a new head for that motor. With a breach in the head, you wont develop much compression, and inturn low power.

If you can weld, that may buy you some time, but no guarantee.

That looks like a Tecumseh engine. Wouldn't have been used in either a B series which was 1974-77 with a horizontal shaft... Or a 1984 anything.

Do you have model numbers of the tractor or engine?

Could the head be warped enough and/or the gasket blown out to cause that?

:text-welcomeconfetti: to the :rs: David.          Call Lincoln at @A-Z Tractor  for a new head.

Thank you for all the replies. It didn’t occur to me to mention which engine it was when I posted last night, sorry.

That's not the same engine as what's in the video that my phone downloads...

Irregardless to that. Have you had the head off?

Check the cylinder head gasket?

Hand planed the cylinder head?

I haven't done anything to try and fix it yet no. Do I need any special tools to take it off? (I have various general tools and a couple of socket sets but not any specialized mechanic tools.)

No no. You'll be fine with that. That's all nuts and bolts type stuff.

To reinstall the head you're going to need a torque wrench.

Hand flattening of a cylinder head can be done by pretty much anyone. It's a bit time-consuming but it's easy to do. You need a very flat surface like a piece of Steel or thick glass that you can take sandpaper to.

First things first of course though. You'll need to get it disassembled and get some more pictures so we can see what the actual defect is.

I have one of those, fortunately.

You will need a torque wrench to reinstall the repaired/new head.

15 to 20 ft lbs if memory serves for those head bolts

Thanks. I have a PDF of the service manual. I looked just now and found the "Cylinder Head Fastener Torque Sequence" figure in there. For K161/181 it says 15-20 ft. lbs. but for K241/K301/K321/K341 it says 25-30 ft. lbs.

It's important to remember that the bolts included in that package should not be used because you don't know the history of them. Also, that used cylinder head will still need to be hand planed.

I would absolutely not recommend buying anything at all until disassembly and diagnosis has been completed and agreed upon.

I would recommend buying from Lincoln at A to Z if possible which is an approved vendor of Red Square.

I agree in that - do not buy a new head or ... really anything til you get that off and get us a couple good pics (like the ones youve already made) so it can be determined just what is going on. And as mentioned removal of the head is truly simple, maybe half hour.

Yessir... I was just letting the OP know that there are options... so hopefully the OP won't give up on this old engine!

I definitely don't want to give up on it: this has been the best tractor I've had.

Addendum that you should add to that, Mike. You only get the cylinder head if you become a supporter on the forum. :banana-dance:

After watching video and seeing where the lighting show is taking place, then looking at head posted, you sir will need the head offered up. It looks to be cracked or burned thru.

As some else said it will explain your low on power statement.
