We really do not know the particulars of exactly how it happened, because he entered a grain bin alone. The bin was 3/4th empty, It was tall enough that if he fell, the fall alone even into "soft" grain would be enough. This makes two farmers three miles apart on the same road, separated by fifteen years. Gary was liked by everyone and farmed my little bit of heaven. This year the yield is the best I have ever seen as all the soybeans are three to a pod
I saw the fire rescue truck go by and stop at his house and got there just as his wife was just out of control with grief. Horrible to see. I work alone quite a bit as well, and it makes you stop and think as we get older and less sure footed we need someone around . Gary was 75 and still was very active.
The rescue/recovery team actually finished emptying that bin for him so they could take him out the bottom of the bin. It took three hours....
