10 HP Tecumseh Quality

Recommended Posts

grinchsr

Tomorrow I am going to look at a 1971 tractor of a color other than red.  It has the 10HP Tecumseh in it and I was wondering if they are any good.  I never owned one and was also wondering about the parts availability.  I know it needs a muffler but other than that owner said it is in great condition.

Their good motors but the solid state ignition parts are very expensive and can be hard to find

Agree with slammer, if it runs, means the coils good worth $150 plus right there.

Carburetors are absolute trash.  One piece oil rings are also not very good on these, for some reason they wear down flat faster than briggs / kohler.  So if it does not knock, or smoke oil, rebuild the carb and it should be just fine.  Be very OCD on the oil changes to keep the internals as wear free as possible.

IMO...

Techys are good motors...(regardless of their popularity or comparisons). The carbs are less forgiving in the department of letting dirt specs and such pass thru them. If you keep the carb clean, she'll run very well. I install an in-line fuel shutoff, and in-line fuel filter on almost anything small motor I own. I run it dry when I park it for a while. Never a problem. Good luck with it.

I agree but I could not pass it up for the price and besides that I am only the third owner and I know the first two.

as said previously it looks a pain to work on! not too sure on that one piece seat pan/running board panel. I've heard they are good workers though.

Runs good for its age.  No smoke or strange noises but the carb surges a bit so I will be looking at that.
