Sorry didn't read it. I thought it was an onan service manual. Not a wheel horse manual. My 88 runs 3000 to 3100 max. Which it's just fine for what I do.

Yes, that is where I got it.  I agree, doesn't make sense for the tractor. Would make sense for a generator like Theroundhousernr mentioned. It's clearly in reference to the Wheel Horse. Maybe some other Onan owners will jump in here to mention what rpm's they are running at. Oh Martin, I mentioned your engine as being a" 94" by the engine  Id tag in your picture above. Which I also have a 88 516H. However, the engine ID tag on that is 87. My 520H has a 94 on the engine ID tag and the ID plate on the tractor has been painted over and the previous owner tried to recover it without luck. I call my 520H a 94 but I'm guessing it could be a 95 also.

 

that tag style was used up until sometime in 95. this one is a 95 (spec D)

 

 

then at spec G they went to this style tag. again this one is a 95 but spec G

 

 

the spec letter is the last letter in the model number.

My '91, '94 and '96 Onan P220's all run at 3600 RPM.

I've never seen any manual that recommended any other speed.

 I was reading the wrong line. It's the part number that determines the year. Not the serial number. In that case mine would be a 95. 795220. I am always learning from this site. Thank you, too all that have replied.

the way i understand it is the serial number contains the build date.....

 

for these engines its the first 3 digits (MYYxxxxxxxx)

where M is the month in letter form and YY is the last two digits of the year.

 

J943239660 ( from my 1995 416H) was made 10/94

 

C953340917 (from my 1995 416-8) was made 3/95

 

 

heres how they do the generator serials, i understand the engines on our tractors are similar with the build date, but I'm not sure if the subsequent digit determines plant code etc.....

_{You would be correct. I got confused when I told you that, you had a 94 and you replied with, you had a 95.  I was referring to your engine only. So, looking at your ID tag and reading the part # 795210. I figured I was reading the wrong line. Which this answers my question. It is possible to have a previous years engine in the next years model tractor. Your 416H has a 94 onan engine in a 95 model 416H.}

yes, as is with any engine that came in our tractors, the engine could have been made a month or two before. the serial on the tractor is what determines the year of the tractor. 

 

i want to apologize to the original poster of this topic (6wheeler) for taking this thread way off topic. i wanted to stop it earlier and start another thread on the whole serial number thing but i didn't because i wasn't sure how far it was going.

 

i think if we need to continue off of the original topic with the serial number thing another thread needs to be started.
