Got a 76 B80 that doesn't seem to be charging. If I start the tractor and put a volt meter across the two large wires coming out of the motor should I get voltage or some kind of reading. I am trying to determine if there is something in the motor not working or possibly the rectifier or perhaps a wiring issue? does anyone have a wiring diagram? thanx. wnk.

Although I don't have the exact wiring schematic scanned, here's one for a mid 70's C series that is close enough to give you an idea.

Kohler manual TP-2379 provides all the necessary information you need to check the alternator.

First check your grounding of the regulator.

If there is a voltage regulator with 3 wires you should get AC volts across the two wires coming from the engine.

With the engine running full out ISTR it should be about $24 volts (sorry but my Kohler book is in stroage at the moment.

If that checks out OK then check from the third terminal to ground for +DC volts. You should see 13-14 volts with the engine running full out, but that will depend on what condition the battery is in.

If you get nothing at the DC terminal despite having AC at the input terminals then the regulator is bad.

Best of luck. :thumbs2:

Check for corrosion on the terminals of the rectifier too, its real common to get a bad contact there due to rust...
