Snoopy11 5,713 #104 Posted September 5, 2022 I got a snorkel made yesterday. I bought this snorkel a long time ago, thinking I might use it on one of my other machines. I decided to go ahead and use it here... since I had it. It has one hell of a filter in that housing . It isn't totally unlikely that I may change to a performance filter at some point... but in the meantime... I think this turned out pretty darn good. Pretty solid quality build here... I'm pretty happy with it. Regulator should be here tomorrow... then I think that is it... besides maybe a new starter solenoid just for giggles... Or, should I say that I would not take that for granted. Check it out before using it! You CAN use it provided you wire it correctly. The terminal on the back is ground instead of the mountinng tab. "Back in the day" that " I " terminal on the solenoid tripped up many a "grease monkey" that didn't understand electricity. They would get a car in that would start when you turned the key to "START", but as soon as you let go of the key, the engine would die. The purpose of that I terminal was to bypass the coil ballast resistor during starting for a hotter spark. If that "R" in the scribble below failed open, the coil would get power only when the solenoid was engaged during starting. I wish you would have told me that when I was working on my 416-8... Someone told me that the "I" terminal was for ground... so that is what I hooked it up as. I'll bet you can guess what happened when I went to start it... along with a good bit of I guess I must have stopped it and removed the ground wire before damage was done though... Because some solenoids DO use that for the ground return. Hopefully all you did was blow the main fuse... or if not fused, melted the wire. Pretty sure the solenoid went " BRRRAAAPPP " for a second or two. But the wire-wrapped terminal connectors were the first thing to catch my eye. Is there some history with that image? My first guess would be some location where power is being stolen from a distribution line using an ad hoc wiring setup. Makes one wonder if that setup was done while the feeds were hot. That spark you see... if you look closely you can see a hand with a pair of wire cutters at the lower left. I think he's 'adjusting' or 'replacing' the "fuse".
