Learned that from the owner of my local Stihl / Ariens store. I picked up a twin to my hand-me-down 1976 Ariens 24" 10000 series. It had the old bakelite rectifier box and a lot of it was broken out - was mummified under 3 or more wraps of electrical tape to the handlebar. Starter worked just fine unless the machine was wet - ZAP !! got bit every time! I knew these guys at the Ariens dealer changed out a Lot of electric starters - asked him if he had a "dead" one so I could switch out the box. He went in back and gave me the entire upgrade kit, with a roached motor for free. He keeps them around for starter drives and fasteners. No more getting bit ... 8ntruck 6,376 #49 Posted July 26, 2022 Marvel Mystery Oil is another possibility for rust treatment. By the way, please be careful with the rags you use to apply the boiled linseed oil with. A rag soaked with linseed oil will self combust if wadded up and left. Does not take long, either. I left one wadded up and sitting for about 15 minutes.
