Charging/electrical

On my C161 that the previous owner put a  Tec OH160 on, I've gotten the wiring mostly sorted except charging.  The engine has wires off the stator, they go into the engine mounted regulator and exit a single wire into the factory harness which feeds the ammeter then the ammeter heads up to what would be the acc spade on an ignition switch

Here's my issue...while running it shows 0vdc at that wire but had about 48vac, id assumed that the tecumseh regulator also rectified it to dc but maybe not?  What am i missing here

@RED-Z06  how are your ground related points ? don,t count on existing related areas , unless refreshed , take out  bolts , sand down area , dielectric oil / grease , serrated  washers to bite into metal , just an idea , pete

Interesting info there.

The regulators must see battery voltage to turn them on so to speak before they can regulate the charge current.

A good test is to turn the key to the RUN position without the motor running and check regulator DC+ voltage at the regulator for battery voltage.

This covers all models as some are wired directly to the battery somewhere and others are switched at the ignition switch.

At the end of the day with battery voltage you know the charge current has a way to get to the battery and that is all that matters.

There is a service bulletin that states the regulator must see at least 4 volts but best to stick with the battery voltage. There could be 8 volts lost to poor connections and that is a problem.

I'm not the least bit surprised.

These old engines and tractors are built quite heavy from the start.

That engine you have is VERY interesting to see and I'm happy it's on a Wheelhorse.

If you lived closer I'd be lookin' to own it.  🤠

I guess its just that over 20 some odd years of working on small engines, tecumsehs have nearly consistently proven to be the worst, of all the engines ive had personally and then many thousands ive worked on..only 2 have failed catastrophically, both tecumsehs.  I almost passed on the free tractor when he mentioned it had a tecumseh 😂.

I do have a few tecs though, H50s, H60s, HH60s, a couple HM100s.
