Recommended Posts

Have a 312-8 1985 model, having wire ing problem again. Replaced the diode as it was bad and now the wires get real hot when I plug them into the motor! afraid of burning it up so I disconnected the plug that goes to the engine and battery just to be safe! Can't figure out what I am doing wrong, any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance budman2 again!!!!!!!

Is your 312-8 still running the K-301 and a separate voltage regulator/rectifier? If that is the case be sure the two wires coming from the engine to the regulator are on the two AC terminals of the regulator and the wire to your ignition switch is on the B terminal. If it is the 15 amp regulator the AC wires will be side by side and the B terminal will be below them.

Is the diode by chance installed backwards?

Any chance you installed the diode backwards?

Being the three amp DC charging system if the diode was inserted backward the battery voltage would be going directly through the stator to ground explaining the wire heating issue. If you are lucky you didn't cook the stator, however if the stator is burned up they aren't too bad a job to replace one.
