dkg520 525 #1 Posted July 2, 2022 I have a 312-8 that when I shut off the motor and then tried to start it again all I would get was a click from the solenoid. This is what I have done. New battery, starter, and solenoid, and ignition switch. I have cleaned and tightened all connections. I have checked and double checked all safety switches and all are working properly. But I still am getting only a click from the solenoid. I also tried to jump the starter and it seemed as if it was struggling and the motor turned over but very slowly. I’m guessing that I have internal engine issues. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.
OutdoorEnvy 1,763 #2 Posted July 2, 2022 First check the voltage of battery, should be like 12.8 or higher reading. Assuming that checks out try cleaning the grounds for the negative battery cable and solenoid. Clean and remove paint from those spots. Get bare metal. I bet it pops off. If it doesn’t clean the ground for the starter. If no no ground wire for it then it grounds with the mounting bolts to engine.
stevasaurus 23,230 #3 Posted July 2, 2022 It does not sound like internal engine issues. It sounds electrical.
ineedanother 1,662 #4 Posted July 2, 2022 I agree with the others that this is electrical. Likely a ground, but consider too that old wires and battery cables can corrode inside the sheath and really reduce the current. If any of your battery cables look suspect at all, swap them out for new ones and shrink wrap the ends when you do.
pacer 3,176 #5 Posted July 2, 2022 Well, simple enough to eliminate engine probs, just turn the engine over by hand, making sure to rotate several turns, if alls smooth its back to lectrics.

Thanks for any help. If the oil sentry sensor is bad (or the oil is low), you will get a click from the protection relay, which might sound like the solenoid kicking, but really isn't. Obviously, make sure the oil level is okay, but then you can unplug the electrical connector coming from the back of the engine and try it. This will disconnect the oil sentry and the charging circuit, so it won't charge the battery but should start and run. Just one diagnostic idea based on your description.
