toro520Xi 0 #1 Posted June 27, 2022 Guys, I just bought this i think its a 98 model 520xi. Guy said it didnt start as it needed a new battery. Once I got it home I took the battery out of my other tractor which was good and it wouldnt fire. Played with all the switches and still nothing. It has a new starter on it. I was able to start it crossing the solenoid on the starter. Where would I start to look? Thanks for any help.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,389 #2 Posted June 27, 2022 Welcome to the forum. Download this file - each circuit has it's own diagram The operator manual will have specific starting instructions which we are not often used to. Sometimes the parking brake must be applied depending on model.
Handy Don 13,682 #4 Posted June 28, 2022 Welcome to the Forum. That is a nice machine but also one of WH's more sophisticated designs. It will take a bit of time to fully understand and the manuals will be a big help. Pay particular attention to the safety switch interactions. You need the PTO to be disengaged and the motion control in neutral before the starter will engage.
toro520Xi 0 #5 Posted July 3, 2022 (edited) Not having any luck. Checked all the switches and they are fine. Battery is good. If the blue wire is the starting wire, how much voltage should come through? Is that what sends signal to engage solenoid? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,389 #6 Posted July 5, 2022 Should be battery voltage. Relays K1, K2 and K3 must be energized for the blue wire to have voltage. If you use a jumper to apply power to the blue wire does the starter engage? Be careful. Do not slip and apply power to the white wire. That would release the magic smoke in the ignition coils.
953 nut 59,227 #7 Posted July 5, 2022 If you are not familiar with wiring the diagram can be a daunting. As Garry said, that white wire. Some of the colored wires are likely to be a black wire with a tracer color stripe on them. Check the 10 amp fuse on the pink wire, with the key in the start position do you get power to both ends of the fuse? Is the fuse holder clean and free of corrosion? Have you tried to move the PTO handle slightly while holding the key in the start position? If that isn't the problem lets chase down the other components. Place the rear end of your tractor on jack stands with the rear tires slightly off the ground for safety. A small jumper wire with one end connected to the battery "+" is the best testing tool for the job. Be careful with the live end of this, we don' want any sparks! An insulated gator clip would be a good idea. Touch the jumper to the small terminal on the solenoid where the blue wire attaches, this should close the solenoid and turn over the starter. If that works we will move on to the seat switch. Locate the tan wire and attach your jumper to it then turn the ignition switch to start. You should hear a click as the interlock relay close. If it closes the start relay should also close which would close the solenoid. Presuming this works you can move on to the PTO switch. It is located next to the battery and a bit hard to get at. Moving the battery away from the PTO will probably get you enough room. Connect your jumper to the Gray wire on the PTO switch, sit in the seat apply the brakes and turn the key to start. If this turns over the starter then the PTO switch should be cleaned and examined. Hope this helps. Let us know you make out.
doc724 925 #8 Posted July 9, 2022 OK, so having had one of these, lets assume for now that all the safety switches are in place, operative and properly wired. The demystification guide is great although hard to see. Download your copy with the link Gerry provided. Every time mine would not start it was operator error (me). You must set the parking brake for it to start. Also, the seat interlock can be finicky. If you lean on the side of the seat, the switch will open. So assuming it will turn over, but not fire, it may be the fuel pump. That bedeviled me for a long time so I finally resorted to the old "put some gas in a small syringe and squirt it down the carb throat". if it fires, you have your answer. The last thing to suspect is the ignition switch. I had to replace one. Also, the three relays behind the cowl are identical so you can move them around. Or take each one out, put 12V across the coil of the relay and check the switching of the terminals. You can use a multi meter or one of those battery operated trouble lights. Take your time. You can figure this out!
