whfan74 2,071 #1 Posted July 6, 2009 Well was given a call by a friend about a 500 special with no motor. I was hoping to acquire one of these at some point and last night was the night. Here are my questions...... From what I have read, these came with a Tecumseh H-60 recoil start. Is this the only motor they placed in these??? Now since all of the 500 specials that I have seen have a #6 above the racing flag decal that is located under the hood, then why doesn't mine have any number at all? I hope you can see what I am talking about from the picture. Sorry the quality isn't great since it is from my cell phone. Tractor came with a very solid mower deck and snow plow. Pulled in the driveway at 10:45 last night and was happy to have it home. Hopefully I can make this one as pretty as the ones in the Picture Gallery. Any help is greatly appreciated! wh500special 2,256 #3 Posted July 6, 2009 Wow, you're on a roll! H60 only. Recoil start. GREAT engines! From what I have noticed, there were two "runs" of these specials. The first run - those w/lower serial numbers - have the "6" on the decal. The later run omitted the "6" and the checkered flag decal was likely used on other tractors that saw track duty (like Chargers) so the 6 would not have been appropriate. I'm going from memory of what I think the serial numbers were, but I think the later run like yours should be something like 509XXX. I'd bet if you did a comprehensive search on RS for 2008 you'll find Bill P's post where he was collecting SN's. Other than the serial number plate and the "6" on the decal, I think the only difference b/t the two runs was with the hood. The early ones have the front of the hood punched with the rectangular hole for headlamps and it is blocked with an escutcheon plate. The later hoods aren't punched and have a white "escutcheon plate lookalike" decal in place. Despite my screen name being picked for this line of tractors, I am far from the authority on them. The decal set I got has both sets of decals one set with the 6 and one set without. My serial number is 509068 so Steve your memory served you well!!!
