Carb for Lawn Ranger 1965 H60 L157

Recommended Posts

Copper116

I recently picked up a 1965 +/- ... Wheelhorse Lawn Ranger.  It's got a 6hp Tecumseh with what I can tell... has a H60 stamped on the motor plate.   The Carb shows to be pretty bad... so I'm leaning toward a new carb.  I'd like quality but not luxury prices.

Any leads as to where, how and cost of a good carb for this little 6hp?  The one I took off was painted white.

I'm assuming you don't want to go the rebuild route--kits are in the $15 range on the Jungle site. I've done ok with them.

What also worked for me on a different Tecumseh was a well-rated Jungle site complete carb. <$20 vs. $80 for OEM. Threw the dice and so far winning.

For the LR, if buying a complete carb, make sure that you get one with the choke lever that matches what you have (mine was a 631828 carb or equivalent)

Also, none of the low cost carbs I found have a bowl drain, which I find useful for winterizing. I was able to swap the bowl from my old carb onto the new one after getting a new O-ring seal from an old rebuild kit, but that was an exception. Usually, parts interchange between OEM and aftermarket doesn't work.

Good luck :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

I will look into that carb... I getting more and more things I need to hopefully get it running... I bought a starter (used OEM) on Ebay...stated to run fine... only to discover, it will not engage the flywheel.  It just spins.  I am hoping the seller will refund my money.  He stated "NO" returns... well... I do not wish to return it... I just want my money back.

Amazon.com!

(Sorry, member slang --you'll get the hang of it before long. I lurked and read for several months before dipping my toe with a post and even then some stuff when over my head . You've jumped right in--Kudos!)

You get what you pay for, and many manufacturers in China have that figured out to a "T".

There is no way to manufacture a top quality, 50-year carburetor and deliver it to the U.S. at a profit for <$20.

Chinese industry has created a space station, supersonic aircraft, nuclear weapons, and amazing manufacturing and software skills. As long as consumers will buy the lowest priced item, regardless of quality, instead of a costlier one, companies there will meet the market and U.S manufacturers will leave it. Without Chinese products, there would be no Walmart, Target, etc. Consumers are driving this bus--"China" is a convenient false argument.

That said, I am fully aware of China's political system but on this forum, we specifically refrain from political conversations.

Rant ending...

ALL of the aftermarket carburetors on Amazon are from China or other southeast Asian manufacturers.

Well thanks...Handy Don.   So many options and most have the magic 4-5 star ratings...  I may have to take a shot and risk disappointment.  I could rebuild it but are the parts going to show up, being from other countries as well?   Decision decisions decisions

You know.... I looked that little carb over real good with a magnifying glass and could only find a few numbers on it... 969F15 &  and 132.   Any idea what these numbers might indicate or narrow down the manufacturer?  Also, it was painted white.  Hard to say if previous owner  replaced the carb already.

Hey Copper,

My LR is in a friend's garage across town. I'll scan my pictures and see if I have any that show markings. The numbers you mention don't ring any bells for me.

Many, many, MANY, H60's were on snowblowers and tillers in those years--many painted white (as is the one on my Ariens blower :)). It is entirely possible, and not discouraging, that your carb was scrounged. Remember, the H60 was very much a budget engine at the low end of the T product line. The LR was the least expensive WH in its day and while the WH itself was built to high standards, the engine was not built for heavy duty work or for extended longevity. IMHO, WH expected the engine would be dealer-replaced eventually.

Of the maybe ten Tecumseh carbs I've tackled over the years, only one has been a lost cause. Only if there is extensive wear in the body around the throttle shaft or its impossible to get the fuel channel to the main jet cleaned would I consider it beyond salvage. (One did require a good dunking in a solvent-filled ultrasonic tank, courtesy of a friend!)
