Do tractors have to have license plates in England? If so, why?

Only if you use it on the road, half of ours are road legal and the rest don't go off the farm.

When you say on the road, do you mean say from the farm to another nearby field?

As far as I know it has to be fully road legal even if you only head across the road to the next field 100m away.

We run (ran) the farm directly opposite our gate and never take the unregistered vehicles. Its probably as much to do with insurance as anything, would be no cover if vehicle not road legal.

Our smallest road registered is a 35hp kubota compact and one of the old massey 35's.

Even the wheelhorse would have to be registered. Pretty strict over here compared to some countries.

The exception is some of the small outlying islands where you can still get away with any old rustbucket on the roads/tracks.

I figured it had something to do with either taxes or insurance. Thanks

Don’t they all? Someone has to pay for the waste.

The picture of the Crown Vic police car is also a picture of some of my work.  The company I retired from made the steel wheels on that vehicle.  I was the project engineer on the dies to make that wheel.

Am I famous world wide now? :D

Excellent stuff Norm. Thank you for taking the time to post.

Trina and I both perked up at the blue Moto Standard tractor.

Any further info on those?
