Can someone advise what the "healthy " compression reading range would be for the Briggs 18 hp in a '84 GT1800? I  would like to take compression reading for prospective purchase of GT 1800 .....but also need to know if it has a compression release valve? Any other insights, or advice, or info, about that engine is appreciated? What to look for, etc???           thanks !!!!!!!!

Some of those engines have been known to loose valve seats, like the Onan 20.  Compression check should show that.

I too would like to know this. My GT-1800 has god knows how many hours on it so for the heck of it I’d like to do a compression check and see how it’s doing compared to the specs.

Briggs really doesnt give a compression spec..their compression release means that a good engine will show low compression, they generally say...key off, turn the flywheel backwards by hand...if it bounces off the compression sharply, its adequate.
