1960 Wheel Horse.

Recommended Posts

Hello, I need some help if possible. I have a 1960 wheel Horse 550. Has original 5.5 Lawson and carb. It's a little hard to start but when running idles okay. Runs and transport's fine 1 and 2. But if I put a load on it or transport in 3rd gear she bogs down.(no power).  If I stop and wait after about 3 minutes she will even out and idle fine. Cleaned carb and fuel. Valves maybe? Oh this just started out of the blue last year. It was fine, Then not. I would appreciate and suggestions.  Thanks Steven

WHX??

Kinda sounds like not getting enough fuel? Float in bowl hanging up and not letting gas in but if it sets a bit bowl fills up.

Just had the same problem on a Techy vertical, V6 and wrastled with float/ inlet needle till no end. There is a very particular way the little spring thingy has to be on the float/needle. Either it would not shut off and flooded out or would not let gas in.

Thanks I'll pull the carb and check.

Loosen the fuel cap. Vent may be restricted.

Pullstart

I’m guessing this has the glass fuel sediment bowl?  Any visible blockage there?  If you shut the valve off and run the fuel out, then turn the valve back on, can you see fuel rush through the bowl?

If you pull the carb back off shake it next to your ear to make sure the little ball in the vertical tube rattles.  it has to be free for it to work properly.  There is a thread somewhere on here about cleaning a Tecumseh carb and pulling all the little round covers to clean the passages behind them.  i didn't find it, but maybe someone can find and post that thread.

My 702 was doing that.  I took the gas line loose at the carb and blew some air back toward the gas tank.  Whatever was clogging the line was gone and it ran great.  Going to have to clean the tank and the bowl under the tank one of these days.
