Dual Wheel Adapter Variations

I got a great deal on a pair of 6x12 Generals for my 753 at the WH Show this year. They were originally supposed to be a spare set, but after seeing Bell's sweet 633 dually I'm hooked. I've seen two types of spacer kits for this application:

1) the type with a round spacer to fit between the two outer rims of the actual rim & bolts through the wheel weight carriage bolts holes fastening the two wheels together

2) the type made of four pieces of pipe stock welded to a square frame that is bolted between the two wheels

Now I know that both kits accomplish the same effect, but is any one type stronger than the other? On one hand I would think that type 2 would not allow the fastening bolts between the rims to twists under load, but the spacer of type 1 may create enough friction between the rims to do the same? Would there be any negatives to dual wheels in regards to torque loss or transmission stress? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

Either style will work fine and will be plenty strong if bolted on tight. There is also a dually adapter that bolts on with the inner rim and then the outer wheel bolts to a flange on the adapter. The easiest to build might be the number 2 style with pipe stock and plates welded on.

Found a set of the bolt on adapters on ebay. this set is being built with square tube, most use round pipe but these give you the idea. Ebay link to adapters

My ranger with dual 5-12s has worked great with ring style adapters.

I forgot the stress question. Yes duals will stress the axles more than single tires. The best idea to minimize the stress would be to keep the tires closer together and run less air in the outer tire.

There are also agricultural style clamp on DMI duals. They're fairly rare, but a few folks have them, and some have replicated them. I've never seen them in the 6-12 size though. These are mine in the 23x8

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the info and pics. Jason I was able to catch a glimpse of Rustbucket's 753 pic and I see what you mean. I think this fall I'll double up the 753's rear. :thumbs2:
