Don't use the St*ns hydro filter

Recommended Posts

Just an FYI, do not use the St*ns (* is incase I can't name brands here, you can figure it out) hydro filter. I am fixing up my newly aquired my 520-H, and ordered a filter online, it came it as a St*ns. The outercasing was flimsy, compared to the OEM one that came off. The lip and seal were different in design, but it seemed it should work, worst of all it leaked. Went to get a Napa Gold 1410 (made by wix, same as 51410) and it is a perfect match to the OEM, you can see the quality difference, it was almost double the price, but for something that should last 100 hours, you want quality.

Just venting as the 520 goes back together

The general rule for the hydro filter is to use the Toro part. The hydro filter should not have an internal bypass valve which some of the aftermarket filters have.

the wix/napa, 1410 is specifically made for hydro's it even says it in the filter description, Toro/JD/Cub/Kubota etc etc. This St*ns was suppose to be a replica...it is a POS

The only thing Stens I am using is the PTO belt, my drive belt is a NOS WH belt the dealer still had, 10x's better build then what was on there

You will also want to purchase the Toro PTO belt. The off brand model you purchased will probably not hold up near as well or last near as long. That belt takes alot of abuse because of the twists and turns it has to make to drive your deck.

Were you able to replace the crank seal??

Steve,

A little disassembly a day, a pulley pul.ler from advanced auto, and advice from here and my tractor forum, the crank shaft bearing plate gasket is replaced and so is the plates end oil seal, everything was cleaned with brake parts cleaner, I used a thin bead of high temp RTV, and OEM Cummins/Onan gaskets, even bought an extra set incase I screwed up while installing so far so good.

I changed all belts while I was in there.

Bearing grease on the pto bell and shaft

Oil and filter change

Oil and filter change on the tranny

Fuel filter change

2 weeks ago I put in new air filter, batt, sparks

It seems to run like a champ...happy you refused that trade. The new ags are mounted and on and look great. Just waiting for a new breather and pack, seat absorber, and the new seat.

All that is left is two mount the 2 side panels and put the deck back on.

I know I know, but I already have her, plus it is easy to change, I will let her wear, but the next one will be OEM
