Handy Don 14,054 #4 Posted April 2, 2022 Those little test leads cannot carry enough current to spin the starter motor. To really show what's happening, you must connect it to a battery (to both the + and the -) with heavier wire and then activate the solenoid to "switch the motor on". Not sure what you mean by "starter ran.my battery dead and wouldnt start the tractor any more" means. Did the engine crank and not start until the battery was exhausted? I was plowing snow one day with my tractor and I noticed my gauge was dropping charge so I shut it off put it away for a bit then came back out. Started it up ran it for a bit then shut it off but then it wouldn't start. So I charged the battery for 20min on 40amp then tried to start it on 200amp wouldn't. Unless I kept turning the key quick then it would do something. So I finally got to the starter cleaned the whole insides sanded everything and still nothing. Handy Don 14,054 #6 Posted April 2, 2022 Couple of things come to mind.... I'll give you long odds that your starter isn't the problem. Your battery is not charging and not holding a charge. The likeliest cause of that is an aged or damaged battery--the only way to be sure is to get it load checked (NAPA or other battery service station you trust) and replace if needed. A bad battery cannot be charged--it must be replaced. A 520-HC will not start or run for long on a bad battery. Why isn't the battery charging in the tractor? Likeliest cause is bad connections in the wiring somewhere. Small chance that the voltage regulator has failed. Go over all the wiring, clean all the connections everywhere, including all the grounds, and vaseline or dielectric grease them all when reassembling. Then, put in a known good battery and try starting and then look to see if the voltage is up over 14 charging. Do you have and know how to use a multi-meter? You need to back up and quit abusing the battery, starter, voltage regulator, switches and wiring. 200 amps, you got to be kidding. Follow what Don has been trying to tell you and test the battery and charging system. Did you know that it takes 10 hours or more to properly charge a battery? RED-Z06 2,567 #11 Posted April 3, 2022 Onans in general can get into something called "click, click, start" where the solenoid clicks a few times then engages, its from low power to the solenoid.
