4-17-8 no spark

Recommended Posts

snowhound

Picked up a 417-8 that doesn't have any spark I don't know what year it is and the tag is to faided to read, it does have test lights.  I've replaced the points and still no spark is there a way to test the coil.  I've been trying to start it by using a remote starter switch to bypass the safety switches because when I turn the ignition to run the low oil light flashes but there is oil in it so I assume the switch is bad.

run a jumper from battery positive  to the small plus terminal on the coil.  (not the one that goes to the points/condenser) then crank it and see if you have spark

I bet it's that low oil switch. I had a Magnum 12 that had the same problem with the switch and plenty of oil.

I found the connector and made a jumper to complete the circuit. I always check the oil before using anything, so I don't need a light.

With a row of idiot lights you should have a 1986 model 31-17K802. 1985 did not have them.

The oil light flashing would be because there is no oil pressure yet.

The single cylinder models used the oil level float switch to trigger the oil light.
