1973 14 automatic electric issues

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a 73 14 automatic. It fires right up with you have cables on it but as soon as you pull them off it dies. The wiring looks like a disaster. Tomorrow I’m putting in a new battery. Any advice on why it dies immediately after jumper cables are removed?

If it isn't a magneto-engine tractor, I'd immediately suspect that the battery in the machine is a goner. Non-magneto tractors will not run without a decent battery. But with disaster wiring, it could be a lot of other things!

EDIT: Easiest way to ID a magneto tractor is to trace the wire from the sparkplug. If it goes into the engine near the flywheel, it's a magneto. If it goes to a coil mounted on or near the engine, it's non-magneto.

A new battery and showing the wiring a little love should do the trick.

@Jhawkins   think i would take advantage of the  earlier simplicity of your wiring set up , have any of these , https://kaiweets.com/products/kaiweets-ket02-electrical-alligator-clips-with-wires-test-leads-sets-10pcs?l  , makes wire tracing easy , , would also consider swapping over to a magneto set up later , for solid starting . just an idea , pete
