Help with buying a 416-8

Recommended Posts

Fat Chance

Hey,

I'm going to look at this tractor on the weekend. Everything the seller says sounds good. He said it had 700 hours on it but the tach was a little wonky so he replaced it last summer. Also said the engine runs smooth. Is it trouble to service the Onan engine or is Cummins pretty good support? I'm in Canada.

Any thoughts or things I should be looking out for on this unit.

Thanks.

The 400 series of tractors is known to be rugged and reliable overall.

I can't speak specifically for the Onan engine.

Here's a thread we put together last fall with a large list of things to look at, check, fix, repair...

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Echoing @ebinmaine, 400's are good generally and the Onan, well maintained, is powerful and long lasting but, like any machine, it'll do best with regular services per the manufacturer. 700 hours is fine if it's had regular oil/filter/air cleaner changes and the cooling fins are not clogged (Onan's use LOTS of cooling airflow). Parts are available in the US but have become harder to find and more costly. I can't speak to Canadian support.

Please head up the top of the page and read the guidelines (under Browse) for posting on the forum. We are a bit more restrictive than some other sites--especially when posting links.

Good luck!

:text-welcomeconfetti:To The :rs:     The Onans seem to fall into the same love/hate relationship as the Kohler/Tecumseh and Ford/Chevy.

I have  Onans, Kohlers, and Tecumsehs  and all have been good engines.    The Onan has a history of wiring poblems, rear cylinder cooling problems, and the carb must be clean.

That tractor has too much junk for my taste, I would look for a hydro that hasn't been molested.

@Fat Chance  Welcome to Red Square.

We do not allow links to other platforms on this site.  You can post a picture of the horse for discussion, but no links or where you found it.  :occasion-xmas:

416-8 is one of my favorites but ..... I would want a Kohler engine. As I have said in the past, this was one I wish I could have back. Around here that price is way more then I would spend on it

How do we know it's been molested?

Never mind I put two and two together ...came up with 5 & saw Steve edited his CL link.

In that case Fat take pics and report back keeping in mine the possibilities on the new to us list. Question the snot out of the seller.

I see a homemade weight box?, but don't know how it is attached.

The covered seat likely is wasted.

Holes drilled in fender for rear light.

Foot rest pad is gone.

Electrical cables run outside, probably for lift.

A Rube Goldberg winch type plow lift.

Exhaust pipe leaning and will likely break an expensive muffler.

An oddball snow plow adapted somehow.

How do you open the hood?

Odd mower deck wheels.

Thanks for all the input, folks.

And I do apologize for posting the link without reading the forum rules first.

I'll let you know what I discover this weekend.
