GT14 Choke & Throttle cable replacement, thin nut problem

Recommended Posts

Dave 1953

I purchased a new throttle & choke cable for my GT14. I am blind now so I asked one of my sons over to do it. He was able to get the nut on the back of one of them off but could not get it. back on. He said there is no room to get a wrench, socket, needle nose pliers on it. I told him NOT to use anything on the nice shiny chrome bezel on the front and mess it up. Well as soon as I turn my back to him guess what?? Now I got bite marks on the bezel and he still could not get the nut back on. He just left it like it was and went home so now I don't have a functioning cable ( it's the one on the right, I forget which one it is). Any suggestions? Moral of the story is don't let someone who can't fix it work on it. I could used to have done it myself but with my almost non existent eyesight I can not work on 'em anymore/

If I understand you correctly, it is best to completely pull out the cable so you can have more room to re-start the nut and maybe fix the thread.

A die at this point might work also.  :eusa-think:

I think you may have misunderstood me. My son was able to get the nut off the back of the old cable then he put the new cable in but could not get the nut screwed back on the new cable. There is no room up in there to get a socket or wrench on the nut to tighten it back up.

When I replaced one of my cables I had to remove the steering wheel and the dash board plate to get at the ignition switch and move it out of the way to get at the throttle cable. Not something I would want to do every day. My arthritic old hands don't work too well any more.

I have a new dash and shifter plate to put on it and I knew I would have to pull the steering wheel but I was gonna wait till last to do that. I guess I will have to alter my plans. Thanks

I had the same problem but couldn’t find another cable set at the time. My solution. :handgestures-thumbupright:

That's a neat setup and I'm sure it works good. I am more of a purest almost to the point of being fanatical about putting them back as close as possible like they were when new unless it's something you can't see. Mine has the 27/8.50-15 ag tires on it that were on it when it was purchased new. My GT14 has never had a deck on it, it was bought purely to make garden with. My tires are all air cracked from age. I have called all over the US trying to find NOS Goodyear tires like it has and I have 1 new one in my possession that my local tire store had had it up on the shelf for decades. I know there is another one out there somewhere I just gotta find it. I love hunting obsolete NOS parts and when I find one what a rush I get man ! What are the chances of finding an old NOS Goodyear tire at your local tire dealer on the first call that nobody else has, maybe thousands to 1? Anyway, thanks for the pic.I did post some pics of it as some wanted to see what a new one looked like, they had never seen one before.
