Raider 12

Well guys your not going to believe what I got myself in to. I'm getting ready to buy a Raider 12. I think it is a 1968 or 1969 I'll have to get some pics for you guys. The tractor has a K301 Kohler 6 speed Unidrive new starter new coil new wiring set points and cleaned them all new tires which are ags. It just needs a good bath and wax. I actually wasn't going to buy it at first I asked him before if I could buy it but he said no was going to hang on to it and then yesterday I was getting a slot hitch from my 520 and I kept on asking him what will you take for it and he said 400. It doesn't run at the second he said he can get it running Sunday it's been sitting outside from all I can see it's solid. The hitch pin was froze up when we went to get the slot hitch off so he took an air hammer and it kind of scuffed up the transmission a bit and he used a little bottle torch so just asking about that. The best thing about it is it's in the neighborhood I'm going to have one of my friends which is a horse owner in my neighborhood to come see what he thinks of it.

Well it wouldn't run. It would run off of starter fluid I know what you guys said about using starter fluid so I won't be using that when I'm trying to start it. The original price was $400 and now he's letting me have it for 200. So maybe I can get it running he thinks it has a hole in the float and it's not letting the bowl get filled up. one thing I'm going to do whenever I get a hold of it which will probably tomorrow or even today I'm going to replace all the fuel lines and see if that helps any. And if I can't get it to run I'll probably just take the ag tires off the rear end of it and put them on my 520. Also before I give up on it would you guys have any recommendations for carburetor rebuilds for the k301 on Amazon. What would cause a knock in one of these engines when you turn it by hand you can hear something loose in there. And he said when he runs it it shakes and vibrates alout.

I suggest getting an original OEM Kohler kit part  number 2575701S. I have had mixed experience with the aftermarket kits.

Could be that the balance gears failed. Or ??? Can't know for sure without at least pulling the oil pan off to see what's goin' on in there.

That early shouldn't have them but I wouldn't try to get it running with out checking further. Does it have compression?

Be careful 200 might be a bit high with out some eyeballing here.  ...yah pics guy. The id plate under the dash will nail the year.

Well my dad didn't let me get it he said it just didn't look like it was worth the money. And he said one tractor was enough anyway.

Want me to have a word with dad?

Lay the guilt trip on him TJ ... remind him how learning things mechanical lasts a life time and there are great jobs out there for the mechanically inclined.. and sounds like you got it dude.

BS him and tell him you are an inspiring diesel mechanic cause that's where the big money is. Reverse psychology I think they call it.

Didn't work for me mine told me to join the military ... not the worst advice from my dad....

I know this is a dead issue because your dad said no, but I think the things I quoted would be reason for caution. Both are signs that his machine maintenance skills might not be that great so it may not be that well maintained First, the comment that a hole in the float would not let the bowl fill is backwards. If the float is full of fuel it'll sink and never shut off the fuel and you'd likely flood. The air hammer and torch and scuffing the transmission aren't a showstopper, but they tell me he's an impatient guy and maybe a little careless. The knock would be the real concern. Could be a bad rod bearing, main bearing, wrist pin, or broken piston. Any one of these could cause an expensive trip to the machine shop (but I repeat myself, all trips to the machine shop are expensive, if you can even find one that'll work on a small engine).  A knock like that, realistically, could put you in the market for a replacement engine.

All that said, for the right price it could be a good learning experience. There are many worse places you could be and things you could be doing than tinkering with a tractor in the garage or shop. Good luck
