K321 motor mounting bolt torque

Recommended Posts

Need to remove one of the engine mounting bolts to add a better ground.  Since the block is cast, is there a torque value?  Been avoiding this in fear of overtightening and cracking the casting.

ALL bolts have a torque rating.

3/8 course bolt Grade 5 should be around 30, 35 ft lb.

I think that you are right by being concerned.  If the engine sets well with the bolts completely loose there is less chance of harm, if the engine rocks a bit, adding a shim is helpful.  Once setting well I would use about 75% of the usual torque specification due to the soft cast metal.

:twocents-02cents:    Your head bolts are torqued at 35 Ft/Lb and are bolted into cast iron also. I'd be afraid that any less torque may result in the bolts not remaining tight.

@Mustang67ford   when you pullout that bolt  for an engine to frame ground point , use a serrated washer for secure metal bite , dielectric grease , bolt this on top to have a go to on ignition and headlight , ground wire  https://www.amazon.com/Gardner-Bender-GTA-2N-Aluminum-Mechanical/dp/B000MVOX9G/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=Electrical+Lugs&qid=1645576436&sr=8-8 . electrical section in h/w stores have the bolt size lug you want . ground cable from battery ground bolt point , bolted to this corner engine mount area , is easy and really insures your grounding is solid . used 4 ga cable , on first lead , then , 10- 12 ga wire from engine corner to rectifier base bolts , from there to headlight grounding . solid operation on my 3 horses , this set up works , pete

FYI.

When I'm building a chassis wiring harness I put the large battery ground cable right to a starter mount bolt.

Thanks, will take a look at that as well

Also seen there are 2 open engine mounting bolt holes not used on the one side where the motor is bolted from below.  Could be a good location to mount a ground.

As long as they don't interfere with anything and the cable that you use also doesn't interfere with anything, that would be a great location for a ground.

Ended up grounding to the starter as well then jumper up to dash area.
