Dave 383 stroker 5 #1 Posted February 22, 2022 1984 c-165 not charging. Checked the ac voltage coming out of the engine (30-+). I Checked at the rectifier plug and noticed the two wires that were cut. Do these need to be hooked up in order for the rectifier to work? Thanks Dave
pfrederi 18,563 #2 Posted February 22, 2022 Rectifier should have 3 terminals on it. Two marked AC connect to the two wires coming from the engine. 3rd wire goes to the "R" terminal on ignition switch
pacer 3,176 #3 Posted February 22, 2022 OK, lemme verify what I think I'm seeing ..... your 2 meter probes are stuck in the plug? and the yellow jumper is stuck in the other end? and is that plug a 3 wire plug? ----- sooooo, now the question is - where is the rectifier? You have to have the 3 wire plug connex to the rectifier, 2 wires side by side are the 30-32v ac coming out of the flywheel and a 3rd 13-14v dc going to the switch.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,392 #4 Posted February 22, 2022 This model should have a 2-wire regulator 1

WHX?? 51,370 #6 Posted February 22, 2022 Looks like from here those wires should be going to the stator. Is there a regulator Like Garry pictured above?
squonk 43,361 #7 Posted February 22, 2022 (edited) following the yellow wire to the wire cover thingy it turns to black wire which should lead to the regulator Garry showed. Those cut wires should be going to the stator under the shroud. Garry is there a wiring diagram for this tractor? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,392 #8 Posted February 22, 2022 Do not have a 1984 diagram but suspect the 1983 will be the same. Click on the diagram for larger versions The photo shows a black wire with white stripe. That is considered a white wire as noted in the diagram and should go to the pink (red) wire in the other end of the connector.
Dave 383 stroker 5 #9 Posted February 22, 2022 Yellow and red wire goes to the rectifier ( behind the battery). The two black wires are to the left in the second picture that go into the engine. The two cut ones are two the right. I am getting 32 + ac volts up to the plug.
953 nut 59,252 #10 Posted February 23, 2022 Your rectifier will not work if you don't have 12 volts going to the RED wire that connects to the amp meter. Also, the rectifier needs to be grounded.

I have no idea what those cut wires are for then but they must be factory wires. Is ther a +12 volt wire coming from the ammeter to the plug? Check the plug carefully it was melted on my C-145 giving bad connections. By any chance are both cut wires going to the same terminal on the plug? The black wire spliced to the red wire 2nd pic where does that go? Ther was two wires like that but on tractors with twins like a same vintage 175 or 195. Both saw 12vdc. Just FYI Dave that particular rectifier was known for overcharging with extended seat times since it was not regulated. We figure out it's bad we may recommend a different replacement. 61 there Richard? I might be moving.... Edited February 23, 2022 by WHX??
