Probably the bottom end of a connecting rod. @petermil12833 Sir, I saw your post in my email, since I follow your thread. You may be better off (for various reasons) buying a new motor from Carroll Stream. https://www.carrollstream.com/16HP-Gas-Engine-With-Electric-Start-B-p/cs190esb.htm You don't even necessarily NEED that much power if you are just doing plowing duties. You could get by quite nicely with a 212 base if that fits your budget better. Relying on shops to fix it right, coupled with the cost of getting it fixed, as well as labor cost... makes me hope that you have deep pockets. Don

petermil12833 16 #54 Posted April 4, 2022 Well, I haven't gone away -- I used those rare warm days to take everything off the engine, and I just sent it away with a local small engine mechanic. We'll work together -- he'll disassemble and evaluate and tell me what parts we need; I'll search for parts; and he'll reassemble. I do have a question -- I've always assumed this engine (on a 520H) was a P220G, but it appears to be a P 20 XSL. What's the difference? I don't see any. Thanks. Could it have been swapped by a PO?
petermil12833 16 #56 Posted April 4, 2022 Anything is possible. I've learned that this engine is not virgin. But it looks exactly like a P220G except for a badge on the shroud. We're treating it as a P220G.

We're treating it as a P220G. I don't have a pic of that badge, but I think it was just a marketing ploy. I found a serial number that says it's a P220G. 1

If your valves are OK, regrind and reuse.
petermil12833 16 #60 Posted April 5, 2022 That's encouraging. Engine only has 600 hrs, so I'm hoping to rebuild once we assess the damage. Tnx.
petermil12833 16 #61 Posted May 2, 2022 It's time to write the final chapter in this WH520H / P220G saga. (I started this msg a few minutes ago -- but it disappeared, so I'll start again.) The 20 hp Onan is toast. I began tearing it down and found nasty pieces inside, so I turned it over to a real mechanic for assessment. Today, we got together and he showed me that practically everything inside has been damaged -- pistons, cylinder walls, connecting rods, crankshaft, etc. It was filthy when I got it 8 mos ago (600 hrs) and it has clearly been running too hot. It's not practical to rebuild this beast. So I've kept a few parts -- starter, carb and manifold, flywheel, PTO, stator and trigger, new voltage reg, new fuel pump (electric), and I'm looking for a good, used replacement engine. I prefer another P220G, because I want it to be simple. In the meantime, I have a 30 yr-old Toro-Wheelhorse 314H that has resumed its role as my go-to tractor, so I can take my time to shop for another engine. Both tractors have mower decks and I completely rebuilt the 42-inch snowblower attachment last fall, so I'm pretty committed to this brand. Thanks to everyone for your great suggestions and encouragement. I couldn't have gotten this far without you! RS is a great resource, and I'm sure I'll be back. Til then . . . au revoir. 2

Other parts you may want to keep: muffler (if not rusted out), the governor ball spider (especially if it is the version with the tab to lock it in place), and the coil. A while ago I bought an internally broken P220 primarily for its good muffler but I'm happy to have it as a backup "donor" for my P218.
