417A choke cable routing and function

Recommended Posts

Tim Ziethen

I picked up a 417a that has a new carburetor and the choke cable appears to be routed correctly but operates the choke in reverse.  Pulling out the cable should close the choke but in this tractor this opens the choke.  So I need to push in the cable the operate the choke and pull it out to run.  I am thinking the choke plate is put on backwards on the choke shaft but have not torn it apart yet.  Anyone run into this problem and solved it?  The lever is facing downward which is what many pictures show but the choke plate operating in reverse.  Thanks for any help or guidance!

Yup, most of these replacement carbs are backwards...

Read the description completely and look at all the pictures before you buy a Chinese carburetor. Only buy one that states that the choke lever is correct or a proper one is included like in the pictures below. These are from an eBay seller and are for the K-241 & K-301 engines. I'm not sure what carburetor you need on your 417.

@Tim Ziethen , read your issue with interest , first off , cables want to " set themselves "  in how they move / function , if its forced into a shape / angle  it  does not like, it will fight back , move it around to find its UNCONNECTED SWEET SPOT , notice how easy it slides ? at  that point , use super lube lubricant , teflon based , should drip out cable ends . I  also use small throttle  extension springs on related cable connection points to assist cable pull  /. push point. since adding pull springs , my throttle and choke cables , work with out effort ,  add them on the linkage cable pull point , experiment with function , lubricate all related linkage points , no rust or tight bends . did this on my c-85 franken horse , 12 horse magnum, worked out bugs , trials , did the same thin to my other 2 horses , they al work with out effort , very smooth , keep it greasy  and smooth , pete

I had the same issue with a new carb fr on a supplier in Maine. It came with a second choke rod and instructions for changing it. If you have the other rod BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO THIS. The little ball is REALLY little and easy to drop. Cover the hole with your finger and do this over a box just in case the little bugger escapes.

@SylvanLakeWH  have that set up on my 3 horses , EVER TRY TO PUSH A CABLE  ?  pretty simple when you think about it . use a perforated go to bracket for spring pull point , to assist related lever mount , put spring pull tension on full throttle or choke , setting , notice the easier overall return action ? the spring pull and lubrication , just makes it simply work easier . pete

Does anyone know which model carb is the correct replacement.  I do not have any other plate just what is installed.  The option seems to be modify the arm with a plate

or replace the carb with a new one that has the right orientation on the choke lever.  Leaning this way - any recommendations?
