Need to replace a muffler! K-301

Raider12

My 1970 Raider 12 is in need for a new muffler. Do I need to just purchase a generic one off Ebay or the local repair shop. Or is there a better choice for this application? Below is a link to a model I was considering looking for at a near by lawn mower shop. Give me your ideas!

My 69 Charger 12 has a long skinny cylindrical muffler that mounts down and diagonally in front of the engine and discharges to the flywheel side of the motor. It has always been fairly loud but looks like the correct part. The original owners manual cover picture shows the much more common short fat cylindrical muffler that just pokes straight out from under the hood. Of the two, the latter is probably a lot cheaper to buy and may be the only one still available. The mufflers like the ebay image are probably too long to fit properly unless you would route it straight back, and then it would be pretty close to the gas tank.

Your Charger sounds like it has the C-series muffler. Maybe the engine was replaced?

My 69 Charger has the so-called "pepper shaker" style you describe. It is loud, but so was my C-120 with the muffler you have.

Does you Kohler have the funny looking coil used with the breakerless ignition that debuted in 1969?

I have pretty much given up and wear ear protectors. I figure that is a good idea anyway.

If your block is threaded with bolt holes on either side of the exhaust port there are some bolt-on options that are interesting.

I have wondered if one had the gooseneck parts for the C-series muffler if you could put a muffler like your link in front of the engine.

My tractor is actually a 69 charger 10 model 1-7041 with a 1980 wheel horse spec 12 HP K301 on it. My understanding is the original engine was probably a Techumseh HH100? I bought it already converted from a wheel horse dealer I worked for back in the early 80's and it had a rusty muffler of the type I described when I got it. I bought a new muffler of the same type back then, still going strong. It is installed to the engine via a piece of 1" threaded pipe that sticks out of the block about 2". The muffler fits directly onto that pipe stub and is fastened with a standard style muffler clamp. The engine has the internal charging system and a standard automotive style coil with breaker points. There are two pilot holes adjacent to the exhaust port, but I do not believe they are threaded. This style muffler has a more finished look to me than the pepper shaker style that should have been present, it's safe to say no K series engine is quiet in any case.

If I I had the holes on my block I would tap them and buy one of these (it took me a while to find it again, but here you go):

I guess this is his last one.

I bought one and was going to drill and tap my block, but got cold feet. It sure looks like it was made for the K series as the top strap would go right to one of the head bolts.

This is the original engine on this tractor. And it does have a pair of mounting holes on each side of the exhaust port. The muffler showing in this pic is very close to the original one I took off many years ago. And the muffler in the picture is same one I currently have on the tractor now. The only difference between the original and this one, is the original had a pipe coming out of the top end that curved back to the exhaust port. But, before bought a new generic muffler, I wanted to see if there were a more of an a original looking muffler first.

Here is the one I have one the tractor now, and considering purchasing.

My Kohler k-301 did have this ignition originaly. I replaced years ago with point system.
