"New" 416-8 and helicoil help

Recommended Posts

IthacaJeff

WH'ers:

I just purchased this 416-8, mid 80s (Kohler K-series) with a surprisingly

solid 48" SD deck. It also has doughnut wheel weights, a rear axle quick-

attach, and good tires. It also has that fancy seat! The sheet metal has

issues that falls in line with the "What was he thinking??" reasoning.

Now the bad part. The spark plug hole was "fixed" by the previous owner

with a helicoil, but the plug rocks a bit and compression is lost through

the poorly fitting plug. I don't know if washers are needed, or the whole

helicoil needs to be re-done (if possible). This is not something I'm too

familiar with, but should I assume my local small engine repair place could

fix??

I read a prior thread about helicoils, but I'd like to get a fresh opinion,

especially since the helicoil is already in place but the plug doesn't fit.

BTW, the engine does run, surprisingly well for losing compression through

the spark plug hole.

Oh. . .$280 is what the beast cost me. Figure the mower deck, weights, and

rear attach-a-matic are worth that!

IthacaJeff,

I see you made a trip to Candor. I saw that too but I

already have several projects lined up. It should be able to

to be made into a nice looking tractor again. If it were mine the

first thing i would toss is that seat. I would look for a replacement

head too instead of messing with heli-coils.
