416-8 dies with PTO fully engaged

Not sure if this belongs here or over on engines. All my "ponies" are workers and I just landed a nice used tiller for the 416-8. Put the rockshaft in and tiller works well EXCEPT...when I FULLY engage the PTO lever it wants to kill the engine...??? I have played with the adjustment rod and found a sweet spot where it will run the PTO fine...until I push it that last couple inches to fully engage and it kills the engine.

Anybody ever had that issue before???

:text-yeahthat:  Most pto's have a safety switch that won't let the engine crank with the pto engaged.  I think some also have a pto safety switch that cuts the seat safety switch into the power to the ignition, so when the pto is engaged, you need to stay seated.

 

If the seat safety switch goes bad and does not close, what you are experiencing can happen.

My '89 310-8 is set up like that. If I'm going down the steep hill in my backyard with the PTO engaged and I shift my butt a little, the engine starts to cut out until I sit back down.

It's also possible that the PTO linkage is worn and the switch is on the 'hairy edge' of being closed all the way.

 

Try to get a good look at the PTO switch as you are engaging it.  You may find that as you engage further the switch is opening again.

OMG! I was operating the PTO while standing checking out the tiller operation.

Was used to my C series tractors and thought the seat switch was for starting.

Put my butt in the seat and all works fine! Probably the fastest, easiest fix I will ever experience on my "ponies"....thanks to all the gurus on this site!!

Be careful operating an attachment especially a rotating one while not in the seat , can turn bad real fast. Bob

Appreciate the warning about operating moving attachments while not in the seat. Grew up on a working farm with big tractors and every kind of implement. Also, worked on railroad trains and sailing vessels so am well aware of the danger of "moving parts". Good advice just the same.

Got the tiller working with some modifications. Refurbished the plow and have a working push blade.

Love these little tractors and all the implements they can operate!!

I consider myself a "micro" farmer....lol...my Dad would have a good chuckle...
