truckin88 104 #1 Posted June 23, 2009 So I took my side tins off, and inspected my drive belt, and it is in really good shape. The PTO belt was just replaced by me, well I posted about an oil leak on my newly aquired 520-H, I thought I fixed it cleaning the crankcase breather, all it did was slow the leak down. I now found it is the PTO gasket. Where do I get a new one? Will I need special tools to replace, any other gaskets replaced while I am in there, I have never done this job so all info is appreciated. I guess at least I know it does not burn oil now! HELP!!!!!! PLEASE!!!
truckin88 104 #2 Posted June 24, 2009 anyone? could I just use RTV?? I doubt anyone has one in stock.
catman81056 3 #3 Posted June 24, 2009 PTO gasket? All my tractors are older models, but I've never seen a PTO that contained oil. Is the crank seal leaking or maybe the side plate gasket?
truckin88 104 #4 Posted June 24, 2009 It is the gasket between the block ande the round plate directly behind the PTO pulley/ drive belt pulley. Sorry for not know the correct terminology here. Hope this helps. There is a gasket as I can see about 3 inches that are sticking out broken off. This is an Onan 20HP Twin
truckin88 104 #5 Posted June 24, 2009 the round gasket with bolt holes seen here: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ONAN-BF-B43-48-P-2...alenotsupported Thats what I am talking about, who would carry one locally? what is it called. How hard is it to replace, any help is appreciated.!!!
Jim_M 179 #6 Posted June 24, 2009 The plate you're talking about is the crankshaft bearing retainer plate. That kit you linked to also includes the crankshaft seal. It's a good idea to replace the seal while you've got the retainer plate off, if you don't there's a good chance it will leak when you put it back together. It's not a hard job. truckin88 104 #7 Posted June 24, 2009 any speacial tools? where does the crankshaft seal go? Is it pretty basic once I am in there? I am guess the crankshat seal is one of the small round ones. Any advice??? Thank you. Should I prelube the gaskets??? I ordered the kit.
Jim_M 179 #8 Posted June 24, 2009 Once you take the pto off take a look at it, it will explain itself. Use motor oil or light grease on the seal. You'll need a torque wrench. Don't overtorque the retainer plate, remember you're working with aluminum....

Does this kit have all the seats I need for replacing that bearing plate seal on the 520-H It is a slow leak, but bothers me that it is leaking. Is there anything else I should change out while I am in there. I figure I might as well get a drive belt while I am in there. This is becoming more work then I expected, but when done it will be one heck of a machine.
Bow_Extreme 548 #10 Posted June 24, 2009 Sounds like you did get the answers you were looking for so I will disregard the PM you sent me. Jim M is correct. It's pretty straight forward to replace the crank seal and plate gasket. Good Luck!!
truckin88 104 #11 Posted June 24, 2009 thanks bow and Jim M for all the advice, I am hoping I am up to the task, but not sure, plus not sure how time consuming it is, with work and all. The kit is ordered we shall see. Nervous about this, I am decent mechanically the finess stuff is not my strong point, anyone wanna trade a 400 series 8 speed for the 520, I will include the gaskets ha Are there any special tools required, any other parts I should replace? Thanks, -Will
catman81056 3 #12 Posted June 25, 2009 Here's a tip to prevent oil seepage; use brake parts cleaner to clean all gasket surfaces, get every bit of oil residue off the surfaces. If you plan on using RTV sealer, dab just a small amount on the gasket surface and then use you finger to spread it around. You just want a thin film of sealer, not enough to squeez out when tightened up. Just my .02, works real well for me.

Should I use both?? Thanks.
Jim_M 179 #14 Posted June 25, 2009 You can use both, just don't get carried away with the RTV.
catman81056 3 #15 Posted June 25, 2009 What Jim said Remember, a "very thin" film of sealer.
