RED-Z06 2,567 #26 Posted January 16, 2022 The original problem, was it ran good but very little governor control, found a flyweight in the pan...new gear in, back together..ran okay then rattled...grit contamination in the oil, crank pin and bore in spec, new rod, piston, rings..runs mostly well but has a rattle. I've watched a video or two that the guy claimed the "Kohler Rattle" was caused by camshaft end play, and when he rocked the cam back and forth on the engine that he had opened, it sounded EXACTLY like the rattle I hear on mine. He said to always shoot for the minimum end play spec because of this. I guess that makes sense. If (when) I take mine apart (maybe in the Spring if it doesn't blow up while plowing this winter) one of the first things I'm gonna do is measure that end play. But then, he didn't rattle the balance gears around in that video so for all I know, they could also sound exactly like that too. After all, it would be 'hammering' on the same general area of the block, so it's likely it would or could sound the same.

When i moved my balance gears in mesh with the crank, they had a good bit of movement. But i never removed them. Im wondering...given the contamination, maybe it hurt a crank bearing

Like if it was a rod hammering like this it would probably have already slung it. I was able to get a more precise idea on when it does it and doesn't. Full throttle...never, no sound Part throttle...never, no sound Just below half speed..intermittently. At or near idle...constantly. At any governed speed, if a load is applied..its constant. This would make sense, to be the gears, because under load you loose momentum on exhaust, Intake and compression strokes then..big burst of power on ignition and power stroke so if the gears are slacked off..they strike on the acceleration of the power stroke...
